LEARNER SUPPORT

At Onawa Secondary School, we are dedicated to the success of our learners.  We have multiple programs in place to support the learners through their academic journey.

Mentor program for Grade 10 & 12 Learners

Every Grade 10 and Grade 12 learner has a faculty mentor who regularly meets with the learner throughout the school year.  This faculty member checks in on the learners academic progress as well as their personal lives.  Faculty members regularly converse with their mentees and offer guidance and support when needed.

Afternoon and Evening Study

Learners have a dedicated time every evening from 18:00 until 20:00 for revision and study.  Teachers often sit in with their class to offer assistance to learners struggling with the challenging coursework.

On Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, learners also have allocated study time from 15:00 until 16:00.  Teachers often schedule extra classes during this time to review difficult material and give extra support to the learners.

Struggling Learners

At the end of each term, staff members evaluate the progress and performance of each learner in their respective classes.  When a learner does not meet the internal pass requirements of the school in a subject, that subject teacher will meet with the learner to evaluate their struggles.  The teacher will devote extra time to that learner outside of class, during study periods or on weekends, to address areas of concern.

Target Setting

At the beginning of each term, class teachers sit down with learners one-on-one to discuss target grades and achievement goals for the upcoming term.  Teachers also praise areas of success for the most recent term, and listen to concerns and give advice on how to improve upon the most recent term.
